PORN DOMAIN TO HAVE XXX IN NAME…YES OR NO?

Do we need a XXX porn domain?

Triple X top level domain.

What will giving porn sites their own domain achieve?

After years of debate, the introduction a new Triple X top level domain name came one step closer last week. Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – the Postmaster General of the internet – finalised its contract with ICM Registry to run the new .XXX top level domain.

The changes mean that a porn site using the domain name RudeStuff.com can now pay extra for RudeStuff.xxx as well. It’s not mandatory, the owners of RudeStuff don’t have to buy a .XXX domain name. If they do buy it, they’re not forced to give up their .com domain name (well at least not yet). So they’ll probably just redirect their new .XXX domains to their existing .com sites.

The adult entertainment industry is generally against the formation of the Triple X domain because they’re worried that it’s a step towards corralling porn sites into one corner of the internet, stripping them of their .com domain names and fencing off .XXX from the rest of the internet. Of course such a move would only impact legit porn sites, as the worst of the porn sites won’t follow the rules anyway. Blocking .XXX sites would only lull parents into a false sense of security that the internet is safe for kids to use without supervision (similar to the proposed mandatory web filtering).

Meanwhile moral campaigners are mostly against introducing a Triple X domain because they fear it will further legitimise porn in the eyes of some people. Some also think it will make porn easier to find, but I don’t see how it could be any easier to find than typing rude words into Google. Even Communications Minister, Stephen Conroy – often accused of pandering to the demands of moral crusaders – has come out against Triple X domains, stating a “lack of identified public benefit”.

So who has been driving the push to introduce .XXX? ICM Registry – the company that will make a fortune by selling .XXX domains to existing porn sites such as RudeStuff.com. They will pay extra for RudeStuff.xxx to ensure that someone else doesn’t snap it up. ICM Registry has managed to launch a new online land rush, a rush for land that nobody even wants.
